Enchanting Morning Family Portrait Session at Brooklyn's Prospect Park: the Alunni family

I met this lovely Brooklyn family after donating a child/family portrait session to their little one's school fundraiser, and absolutely fell in love with little E. from the very evening I met the family for their session planning consultation.

Cute as a mischievous fairy, funny, smart, engaging and inquisitive - I had a feeling we would get along great! It didn't hurt that she took a liking to me from the start too. It really, really helps to capture beautiful pictures of little ones if you establish trust, and show them that you can have fun with them, meeting them on their level. And, as a Brooklyn natural light boutique family photographer, I always make sure to meet with clients and their children in their homes for just such a meeting and consultation prior to our portrait session.

One of the questions I ask all of my clients out our initial Pre-Session Consultation is: 'Have you worked with a professional photographer in the past, and what did or didn't you like about it?'

To which E.'s mom answered, "We have worked with a professional photographer in a studio previously. We found it to be stuffy and forced and did not purchase many pictures."

After learning of their previous disappointing experience with a studio photographer, I really wanted to drive home that working with Andreea B. Ballen Photography on location and in natural light, via a lifestyle family photos session, would be different in every way:

that I look for the magic that happens naturally between loved ones - the tickles, the smiles, the tousled hair and the funny and loving faces - and I photograph all of that. That I never make anyone look at the camera, or say 'cheese' or any other canned thing - that REAL smiles and emotion are my thing, what to me makes a great portrait.

Me: "What were your expectations going into the portrait session? What were you hoping getting family pictures taken this time would be like?" Mr. & Ms. Alunni: "We were excited to take pictures in the park and everything turned out beautifully. Session was easy going and fun.

We went to take pictures in Prospect Park and my daughter absolutely loved it. Andreea was great with her (4 years old) she even brought bread for my daughter to feed the ducks."

Me: "Talk a little bit about getting ready for your family photos and our portrait session together: Were you nervous/jittery/excited coming in?" Mr. & Ms. Alunni: "We were initially nervous about having to fake a smile over and over again – like a say cheese sort of thing but we had so much fun in the park all our smiles were genuine!"

Me: "Though I am so thankful and honored to get to photograph your beautiful family, the question begs to be asked: since you were not satisfied with your previous experience with a studio photographer, what inspired you to invest in a professional photographer this time?"

Mr. & Ms. Alunni: "We initially bid on the consultation service with Andreea at an auction. We were excited to take the pictures upon meeting Andreea as she told us what to expect. Although we initially didn’t plan to spend a lot on pictures we decided it was worth it as the pictures came out so beautiful. We updated our pictures of our daughter and invested in a beautiful framed family photo and album. We were beyond satisfied with the final pictures."
